In one of the most highly-anticipated collaborations to come out London Fashion Week, Rihanna premiered her collection for River Island last night.
Mid-drift bearing aplenty, this collaboration is easily something you can see the 24 year old Pop star wearing on a night on the town or en route to the studio. In summation, the pieces are where tomboy grunge and everything-right-on-front-street intermingle.
An assortment of thigh high split dresses and skirts were at play, offering the daring and fiercely fit more choices to display their physiques.
Paired with pencil skirts, hot pants, floral print pants and incorporated into two piece ensembles, crop tops and bralets were created in every variation if you did not have enough options last season. Rihanna’s staple combat boots and ankle strap heels were consistently in effect as well.
Of required note, see-through mesh two pieces and high-cut, Baywatch-inspired bathing suits not for the faint of heart.
My favorite looks of the entire collection are the floral playsuits and one piece jumpsuit. Can definitely see a brunch or shopping excursion transpiring in those looks.
I have read quite an innumerable amount of disdainful and disregarding reviews about this collection.
“There were few who anticipated a fashion triumph, but, even allowing for the limited expectations, Rihanna’s collection for River Island as brought forth in London tonight was a horror show.”
“If you were a guy hoping for a one night stand and a girl started chatting to you in a bar wearing anything from the Rihanna for River Island collection, you could feel fair confident you’d be getting lucky. The only lingering uncertainty in your mind would be whether or not she would take a credit card.”
“Nipple-baring, crotch-flashing mesh outfits and bra tops aren’t exactly what a stylish gal wants to throw on for a casual night out. The entire collection was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.”
To some degree, many of the views stated were valid. The creations lacked any “wow” factor and missed the mark significantly considering its inclusion in London Fashion Week. With that said, I am unsure what the expectation was. Too often has this writer seen lookbooks and designs in the name of a celebrity that doesn’t remotely coincide with their personal style. It is fair to say that at least Rihanna & River Island stuck to her aesthetic of late. Would I have preferred a collection that resonated with Fenty’s style circa 2009? Dear God, yes. Is that unrealistic? Perhaps.
What did you think of Rihanna For River Island’s debut collection? Would you like to see it return for a second season?
