It’s been a year since the first glimpses of Andre 3000 dressed up like Jimi Hendrix has emerged, but here’s the first look at what is sure to be an extraordinary performance. In All Is By My Side, Andre Benjamin plays a struggling young Hendrix during his early years in London prior to the international success achieved by his first album, Are You Experienced.
With a Jimi-esque fro and fashions so typical of the Seattle guitarist, 3000 has me sold on looks alone. Do not expect to hear any of Hendrix music in the film however, as his estate would not grant production access to his music.
What musicalities can you expect? How about covers of Muddy Waters, Elvis Presley, Elmore James and The Beatles, including his now famous rendition of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
Taking on a feat of this magnitude was no easy feat for Benjamin as he began to recognize parallels between his life and the life of the fallen rock star.
He tells Spin,
“In researching him, I saw a lot of the paths that he went down were the same ones that I went down when I was a young kid…He did what he thought was right for his music. I always gravitated towards him. … This movie is the real s— right here. I think people will learn things they didn’t know.”
The movie will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
Here’s a documentary on Jimi Hendrix, the art and the passion.
