Product Review: Dark And Lovely Au Naturale Coil Moisturizing Soufflé

Dark 'N' Lovely Au Naturale Coil Moisturizing Soufflé

It has been a hot minute since I did a product review. Phew, where does the time go?

While visiting my family in Florida last month (during the five-day blogging drought), I stumbled upon Dark and Lovely’s Au Naturale Coil Moisturizing Soufflé. Okay, it wasn’t quite a stumble, my mother had it and I had no hair care products (Not interested in checking bags!!! Challenge on to pack a carry-on!!!)

I was very skeptical about their hair care products for natural hair since this was the same company that, for all of my childhood, was the mecca of the creamy crack. It was like a snake trying to change its face, and of course the conspiracy theorist in me was convinced they were on some Undercover Brother type -ish, lowkey mixing their potent hair straightening products into to those designed for naturals. You can’t fool me.

But I was at a disadvantage. I had none of the items in my daily routine, plus I was looking for something that would rid me of the woes of curly hair shrinkage. “What the hell” was my logic. So I tread lightly into the sorbet-colored hair soufflé.

I have been lost in love ever since. It’s ultra light-weight, and works almost immediately (Though I still feel think the hair delicacy is laced with relaxer. Hmmm)

Application is simple, results are perfection. While your hair is wet, you apply a generous amount, and either use a diffuser or allow to air dry. I am a rebel so I follow none of the other suggestion for the other items for optimum results ’cause I’m a badass like that. Hmmmph (Definitely considering getting the other items in the line. Judge me not!)

Warby Parker returns with another breath stealing collection for the classic Hollywood lover. Last time, we explored the seedy yet beautiful underground of film noir with the Hayworth Collection. This time, it’s all about fun via the Roaring Twenties with the 1922 Collection.

Have You Heard? Nike Dunk Sky High “City Pack”

After Isabel Marant, sneakers as we know it will never be the same. At least not for pop a vein in my foot, I’m sweating (woo), will stay up until 5am to get my hands on a pair, heel loving addicts like myself. I could never style sneakers to my personal liking, and was finally compelled to throw in the towel. But alas, a spark to burn for an eternity  has been ignited in my bosom  (Academy for Best Leading Actress goes to…). As you know, my love affair with the Nike Dunk Sky Highs began right around the Holiday season a few months ago. My beloved boyfriend gifted me my first pair and I have not been the same Peacock since. Marant may be the architect, but Nike is the perfecter.

I have been salivating over this collection.  The Nike Dunk Sky High “City Pack” has to be the craziest coupling of awesomeness I have ever seen. In tribute to the five major international fashion weeks, Nike has designed each pair to resemble the air of the five metropolis cities. Every pair will be available in their specific city before the global launch March 27.

As a tribute to New York’s go-to “All Black Everything” style, this collectible, released Feb. 9, features a reptilian-print upper with black pony-hair panels and a patent leather Swoosh logo.

While New York went black-on-black, London (available Feb.16) was sent down the rebellious route with vibrant red plaid complemented by a green patent leather swoosh.

One of my favorite pairs, the Milan, is all about decadence and luxury. Crafted out of oxblood leather embossed a crocodile-embossed upper, honey, I am combing the sneaker underground for a pair in a size 10! The Milans will debut in Milan (ha!) this Friday, Feb. 23.

With its pale tweed-and-leather combo as the backdrop to a gold swoosh, the Paris are the latter pair that tug at my heartstrings. Keep an eye on the City of Lights March 2.

The final pair, the Tokyo, is as crazy, sexy, cool as its namesake as it boasts an iridescent swoosh and panels quietly offset by tan accents. Tokyo drift your way into a pair March 19.

All five pairs will make an international debut to select retailers globally March 27.

Rihanna Tapped To Create Four Capsule Collections For M-A-C Cosmetics Plus First Look At The Rihanna For River Island Campaign

Rihanna has signed an unprecedented four collection contract as “creative partner” with M-A-C Cosmetics. The Grammy award winner singer and now fashion designer tells WWD,

“When you think of makeup, the brand that pops into your mind — for something legit — is MAC. Whatever color you want, it’s like ‘Let’s go to MAC.’ I’ve been using MAC on tour for such a long time it was a natural fit for me. I have always loved makeup, and I always said that if I do it, I want to do it with a credible brand.”

This is the first time the cosmetic company has teamed with a celebrity for such an expansive, long-term collaborative partnership.

Each set, affectionately named Riri [Hearts] M-A-C, will center around its signature color, “Riri Woo,” a play on the famous “Ruby Woo” hue. “Riri Woo” will be available online May 4 and 5 at her  ‘Diamonds Tour’ performances at the Barclays Center. The latter collections will be available seasonally, with the the next drop Summer 2013 featuring  two additional lipsticks, powder blush duo and a Lustre Drops shade. As for the Fall collection, expect to see a Lipglass variant of the Riri Woo in addition to  four lipsticks, two multishade eye shadow palettes and false lashes. The Holiday offerings will add another 10 items to the mix with nail polish, a makeup bag and additional lipsticks.

John Demsey, group president MAC’s parent company,  Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., wants it to be clear that Rihanna was very hands on with these efforts.

“This was not a front… This is a true, organic collaboration based on mutual admiration and respect. These four collections are like four tracks on a Rihanna compilation. Each one has its own vibe, look, special makeup packaging and flavor. This is really the convergence of pop culture, fast fashion, and iconic style and makeup.”

By show of hands, will you be dropping a few coins in the bucket for this Rihanna x M-A-C collection?

Peacock Or Not? Rihanna x River Island Collection

rihanna river island11

In one of the most highly-anticipated collaborations to come out London Fashion Week, Rihanna premiered her collection for River Island last night.

Mid-drift bearing aplenty, this collaboration is easily something you can see the 24 year old Pop star wearing on a night on the town or en route to the studio. In summation, the pieces are where tomboy grunge and everything-right-on-front-street intermingle.

An assortment of thigh high split dresses and skirts were at play, offering the daring and fiercely fit more choices to display their physiques.

rihanna river island1 rihanna river island9

Paired with pencil skirts, hot pants, floral print pants and incorporated into two piece ensembles, crop tops and bralets were created in every variation if you did not have enough options last season. Rihanna’s staple combat boots and ankle strap heels were  consistently in effect as well.

Of required note, see-through mesh two pieces and high-cut, Baywatch-inspired bathing suits not for the faint of heart.

My favorite looks of the entire collection are the floral playsuits and one piece jumpsuit. Can definitely see a brunch or shopping excursion transpiring in those looks.

rihanna river island7 rihanna river island8

I have read quite an innumerable amount of disdainful and disregarding reviews about this collection.

“There were few who anticipated a fashion triumph, but, even allowing for the limited expectations, Rihanna’s collection for River Island as brought forth in London tonight was a horror show.”

“If you were a guy hoping for a one night stand and a girl started chatting to you in a bar wearing anything from the Rihanna for River Island collection, you could feel fair confident you’d be getting lucky. The only lingering uncertainty in your mind would be whether or not she would take a credit card.”

The Daily Beast

“Nipple-baring, crotch-flashing mesh outfits and bra tops aren’t exactly what a stylish gal wants to throw on for a casual night out. The entire collection was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.”

The Huffington Post

To some degree, many of the views stated were valid. The creations lacked any “wow” factor and missed the mark significantly considering its inclusion in London Fashion Week. With that said, I am unsure what the expectation was. Too often has this writer seen lookbooks and designs in the name of a celebrity that doesn’t remotely coincide with their personal style. It is fair to say that at least Rihanna & River Island stuck to her aesthetic of late. Would I have preferred a collection that resonated with Fenty’s style circa 2009? Dear God, yes. Is that unrealistic? Perhaps.

What did you think of Rihanna For River Island’s debut collection? Would you like to see it return for a second season?

First Look: Warby Parker’s Hayworth Collection Lookbook

A few weeks ago, the beautiful people of Warby Parker reached out to me to help debut their newest line of eyeglasses and sunglasses. After looking at the wears, how could we say no?

The company, founded by friends Neil Blumenthal, Andrew Hunt, Jeffrey Raider and David Gilboa, was designed out of their desire to “to make the world a better place.” They produce high-end eye accoutrements at real world prices, with part of the revenue donated to non-profit organizations.

Continuing  in the brand’s vintage taste, the Hayworth Collection is an ode to femme fatales and their cynical heroes of Old Hollywood film noir from the 1940s and 1950s.

Fashioned out of variations of the eyewear couturier’s signature acetate and premium Japanese titanium, the designs marry “noir and Art Deco” that resonate in present-day modernity by way of the “Neville” and “Edgeworth” designs.

The premiere of this assemblage also presents two new colorway options, Sugar Maple and English, influenced by the woodgrain aesthetic in addition to the current Blue Marblewood and Striped Sassafras options.

Every pair of frames sold, one pair will be donated to Warby Parker’s non-profit partners.

I am in love (infatuation to be quite honest) with the Neville sunglasses in Blue Marblewood and the Edgeworth numbers in Striped Sassafras. Definitely need a pair of each for my many *in my Humphrey Bogart voice* voyages into Manhattan’s underground. Hehehe

Product Review: NYX Cosmetics Round Lipstick

Happy Black Friday Lovebugs!!! I am getting my shopping fix from the comfort of work. *sigh* Anyway, I am stocking up on my makeup faves. I can feel the evil eye coming from my bank account.

Earlier this week, I mentioned my newest lip fixation: NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in “Hestia.” I have been trying to find a quality deep lip color that isn’t gothic, but doesn’t skim on richness. This sucker is great and within my price range!!! Woohoo!!!

I am so picky when it comes to lipstick. Thin, cracked lipstick on big lips is not hot at all. AT. ALL.

Anyhoot, NYX has 144 shades and I cannot wait to try them!!! I only reapplied once but that’s because I smudged it on my go kart helmet (gross phi gross).

Suggestion: For the most stretch of the coins, order online. If you buy one Extra Creamy you get a free lip pencil. In case you weren’t aware, lip pencils/liners define your lips and prevent your lipstick from bleeding on your face. It keeps it in place.

Stay tuned for Round 2 of NYX lip loving products.

[Kan]Ye or Nay? West x Giuseppi Zanotti For “Cruel Summer”

We may be in a Sweet Fall, but honey these shoes are ready for a Cruel Summer.

Even though Mr. Fly Himself, Kanye West, opted out of premiering a new collection for Paris Fashion Week, he can never seem to stray too far away from his love of fashion.

Once again West tapped showstopping designer, Giuseppe Zanotti, to collaborate with him on a specially designed shoe to correlate with Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music’s “Cruel Summer” compilation album.

The shoe’s architecture plays beautifully off of  the album’s Grecian artwork, which details a brilliant white leaf motif which clearly fell from the cover right onto the front panel of the shoe.

I don’t wear white shoes often. Practically never to be honest. But there is something incredibly beautiful about these shoes. I’m a big fan of shoes that look like artwork. Add some amazingness to life with your shoe game. And though they are stunning, they are also somewhat simple. Two ankle straps, the heel looks about 3 and some change inches, & the leaf design speaks for itself. I bet it looks ultra sexy on. I would wear these to hell and back!!!

Moral Of The Story: The Devil may be in the details, but there’s Salvation in Simplicity.
